Can Psychotherapy help?

What is psychotherapy

Psychotherapy is a process, it is a journey either to treat psychological disorders and/or distress and discovery.  Distress and discovery in this case can also be defined as a search for one self, for meaning in ones life as well as the meaning of the individual’s happiness. In psychotherapy, the psychologist helps people of all ages live happier, healthier and more productive lives. Psychologists apply different techniques to help people develop more effective habits.

How can we see psychotherapy

Psychotherapy is a treatment; it is based on trust and the relationship between an individual and the therapist. A psychologist provides a supportive environment that allows you to grow. You talk openly in therapy with the therapist who is objective, neutral and non-judgmental. Most psychotherapists focus on the individuals, although they also work with couples, families and groups. When choosing a psychologist it is important to feel comfortable and relaxed. One of the most important factors in determining whether to work with a psychologist is your personal comfort with that person.

How can one benefit from psychotherapy

A psychotherapist is a professional on the area of mental health who can help people that :

Feel an overwhelming, prolonged sense of sadness and helplessness.
The problems that they face don't seem to get better despite their own efforts as well as the help from family and friends.
Cannot concentrate on work assignments or on other everyday activities.
They worry excessively, always expect the worst or are constantly on edge.
Their actions, such as drinking too much alcohol, using drugs or being aggressive, are harming themselves or others.

The results and the recommended treatment depend on the individual, the environment he / she lives on, the people around and other factors. Most important is to "connect" with a psychotherapist that you will feel that you can tell him / her everything. To get results on any type of treatment there should be trust between the client and the therapist.

How long should psychotherapy last?

The time that psychotherapy takes depends on different factors which could be:

  • the type of psychological problem or disorder
  • the history and characteristics of the patient
  • what the patient wants to achieve
  • what other factors outside psychotherapy affect the client's life
  • how easy is for the client to cooperate
  • how fast the client is able to make progress.

There are cases where after only a single session of psychotherapy clients feel relief. The only way to evaluate if a psychologist can give a new perspective, can help you see situations differently and finally offer relief from pain, is if you have at least one session with him or her. Most people feel already better after a few sessions! This is more common if  your are working on a single, well-defined problem and

How long should psychotherapy take?

How long psychotherapy takes depends on several factors: the type of problem or disorder, the patient's characteristics and history, the patient's goals, what's going on in the patient's life outside psychotherapy and how fast the patient is able to make progress.
Some people feel relief after only a single session of psychotherapy. Meeting with a psychologist can give a new perspective, help them see situations differently and offer relief from pain. Most people find some benefit after a few sessions, especially if they’re working on a single, well-defined problem and didn’t waist time before seeking help.
